I have a few wall hangers for different seasons and holidays, and I've always thought they looked pretty easy to make. Naturally, I wanted one with a sports theme! After sitting on my to-do list for a while, I'm happy to report that this DIY project was not only simple, it's practically fool-proof! I plan to make another wall hanger for football season and maybe as a gift for another sports fan. Check out the steps below and I bet you'll be inspired to make one, too!
Here's what you'll need:
- Wooden pre-painted letters (I got these at Michael's)
- Wooden circle (Also from Michael's)
- Glue gun
- Pencil
- Black Sharpie
- Acrylic paint
- Foam brush
- Thick ribbon for hanging
- Ribbon for bow
- Scissors (not pictured)
STEP 1:
Apply several coats of paint to the shape you're using for the sports ball. In my case, it's a soccer ball, so I used white for the base color.
STEP 2:
Draw necessary markings in pencil first.
STEP 3:
Go over your pencil outline with a Sharpie marker and once you're done, use your pencil to erase any stray lines.
STEP 4:
Line up your letters as you'd like them to hang. Roll out thick ribbon alongside, so it runs the full length. Roll out 5-6 additional inches to leave room for the hanging loop at the top.
STEP 5:
Hot glue the letters and soccer ball (or whatever additional pieces you like!) to the ribbon.
STEP 6:
Create a loop at the top with the extra 5-6 inches of ribbon and secure the end with hot glue.
STEP 7:
Here's where you can get really creative! Cut long strands of decorative ribbons in varying colors and textures. Use them to create a pretty bow and hot glue it to the top of the wall hanger. Trim the ends as necessary.
STEP 8:
Hang it up and admire your work! :)
I can't wait to do this DIY again for football season! Let me know if you try this DIY project for yourself. Share a photo, too — I'd love to see your handiwork!
XO,
